The short version

Mhari Boli is a free app for learning Marwari. You can use it without an account. Whether or not you have one, we record what the app is used for โ€” which questions are answered, right or wrong, and how long they took โ€” so the lessons can be made better, along with your internet address and the town it points to, so we know where the app is reaching. Without an account none of it is tied to your name, because we do not have it. With an account, we also keep the details you gave us and your progress, so it follows you to another device.

We do not sell your personal details, and we do not show advertising.

Who we are

Mhari Boli is run by Akhil Sonthalia, Kolkata, India. For anything about your data, write to mhariboli@akhilsonthalia.com. We answer within 30 days.

What we collect, and why

WhatWhy
Name, email address, password To make your account, to sign you in, and to email you about your account โ€” such as verifying your email or resetting your password.
If you sign in with Google: your name and email address, as Google gives them to us, and Google's id for your account To make or find your account without a password. We ask Google for nothing else โ€” not your contacts, your calendar, your email or anything in your Google account.
Gender, age group (under 20, 20 to 30, 31 to 50 or over 50), country, state, city To understand who is learning Marwari and where, so we can decide what to build next and, in time, keep the app running.
Your progress: lessons finished, XP, streak, badges, and how well you know each word To show your progress, to decide what to revise with you next, and to restore everything if you sign in on another device.
Your answers: which question, right or wrong, and how long you took To give you more practice on the words you find hard, and to find questions that are unclear or wrong.
How long a session lasted and when it was To see whether the app is actually being used, and how much.
That the app was opened, and that a lesson was started or finished โ€” for everyone, account or not To know how many people are actually using it. Your device makes up a random id and keeps it; what reaches us is a one-way scramble of that id with today's date, so it is different tomorrow, cannot be turned back into anything, and cannot be used to follow you from one day to the next or to link these counts to you.
Your internet address (IP), and the country, region and town it points to To know where the app is being used, so we know who it is reaching and where to put the effort. The address is looked up through ipwho.is, which is the only place it goes, and both the address and the place are deleted after 90 days.
Whether you are on Android, iOS, Windows, Mac or Linux To know what to build and test for. Nothing more detailed than that is kept.
Your answers, when you have no account: which question, right or wrong, and how long you took The same reason as above โ€” finding the words people struggle with and the questions that are unclear. Most people trying the app have not signed up, so without this the figures would describe almost nobody. These rows carry the daily token described above and not your name, which we do not have.

We do not ask for your exact location, your contacts, your photos, or anything else from your device.

Accounts made before 25 September 2026 were also asked for a date of birth, a mobile number and a PIN code, and, for a learner under 18, a parent's or guardian's name and email. We no longer ask for or use any of these; write to mhariboli@akhilsonthalia.com to have yours removed.

Learning without an account

If you skip signing up, your progress is still yours alone: your streak, your XP and how far you have got are kept in your own browser and never sent to us. Clearing your browser data clears them. If you make an account later, we ask before uploading that progress. What we do record, as the table above sets out, is that the app was opened, that a lesson was started, what was answered and how long it took, your internet address and the town it points to. None of it carries your name, because without an account we do not have one, and the token that ties a visit together changes every day so it cannot follow you.

Who the app is for: adults, in India

Mhari Boli is for people aged 18 and over. We ask only for an age group, not a date of birth, and every account holder confirms that they are 18 or older when the account is made. We do not knowingly keep an account for anyone under 18. If you believe a child has made one, write to mhariboli@akhilsonthalia.com and we will delete it. A child is welcome to learn alongside a parent, on the parent's account.

Accounts are offered in India only, for now. Other countries have rules of their own, and we would rather not take your details than take them without meeting those rules. A signup that arrives from outside India is refused, and nothing is kept from it.

Your consent

We hold your account details because you agreed to it: when you make an account you tick a box saying that you are 18 or older and agree to this policy and the terms, and we record when you did. You can take that consent back at any time by deleting your account, which removes your details, your progress and your answer history straight away. Taking it back does not affect anything done before.

Who else sees it

We may have to hand over information if the law requires it. If the app is ever sold or transferred, we will tell account holders by email first.

How long we keep it

What you can do

Questions and complaints

The person responsible for your data, and for answering any question or complaint about it, is Akhil Sonthalia, Kolkata, India: mhariboli@akhilsonthalia.com. We answer within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with the answer, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

Keeping it safe

The site is served over HTTPS. Passwords are stored hashed, never as text, and so are password reset codes. Only the app's administrator can see account records, and only for running the app. No system is perfect, so if something goes wrong that affects your details, we will tell you and the Data Protection Board of India, as the law requires.

Cookies

We use one cookie to keep you signed in and one to protect forms from being submitted by another site. There are no advertising or tracking cookies, and no third-party analytics.

Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will email account holders. The date at the top always shows the current version.
